Adult nets start from Thursday Jan 12th 2012 and weekly thereafter as follows:

1st XI plus invites (via Scott) - 8.30pm to 10pm

2nd, 3rd, 4th XI’s - 7.00 pm to 8.30pm

Unlike every other club in the midlands our pre-season sessions are FREE to members – including occasional use of a bowling machine and access to numerous people with coaching qualifications and experience – too good an opportunity to miss! Make your annual subscription work for you!

Help with Junior Coaching

If you are able to help at any of the following junior indoor sessions, then please contact Dave Phillips (dave@phillipscomputerservices.co.uk)

Mon Evening and Fri Evening at the club

Saturday at Whitley Abbey School - 2pm to 4pm & 4pm to 6pm

Any help from any cricketers aged under 16 upwards would be welcome – even if you can only attend occasionally please let Dave know.

Our thriving junior section needs technical input from experienced cricketers to support the boundless enthusiasm provided by the kids and their parents; the potential to produce even better cricketers is in our own hands.

Midweek XI

We will be making a final decision on the viability of the midweek XI at the end of January. If no-one comes forward to run the side before then it will have to be discontinued. Please email me if you are interested in helping with this.

Pre-Season Open Meeting

As last year, there will be an Open Meeting in early Feb – date to be notified early next year. Everyone is encouraged to come along to catch up, and make suggestions for the coming season.

We have come a long way in 12 months, but still have a fair way to go before we can be confident cricket at the Wardens is back on a sustainable even keel. To achieve this, we need more people to give some regular time – no matter how little – to the management and administration of cricket at Glasshouse.

A year ago, I committed three years of my time to co-ordinate this turnaround. I thank the big group who have contributed, and wait for the rest of you to realise that the Wardens is what you make it. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved - virtually every existing role is available to an enthusiastic volunteer, or new ones can be created to fit available time. After all, it’s far more rewarding to strap your pads on and make a hundred, than sit on the side criticising the batting………

Fundraising for 2012

Following the council’s recent re-organisation of the club’s financial arrangements, we (the cricket section) are now entirely responsible for our own finances.

In order to maintain the status quo in ground hours, overseas player and all other running costs, we need to deliver £10,000 in external income in 2012. This includes some existing items – brochure advertising, raffle, sponsorship – but is still a very stretching target.

To this end, everyone needs to get behind three big fundraising initiatives –

April Cricket Evening Function

There will be a pre-season cricket evening function during early April – details to follow in January. Like last year, it will combine a meal with some cricket-based entertainment. Tickets will be no more than £20 each – please make every effort to attend, and bring friends and family, as we need 175 people there.

Club Brochure

The annual brochure enjoyed a successful overhaul last year, and we need to grow the advertising even further this time around. Stuart Smyth will be co-ordinating the production of the brochure during March, so please make every effort to help him by renewing existing advertisers, and finding new ones.

Floodlit T20 Competition

In an exciting new initiative, Glasshouse Park will host a floodlit T20 week in early August, with Wardens, Leamington, Coventry and Knowle & Dorridge contesting a trophy and prize money over five nights of thrilling action. There will be white balls, coloured kit, music and all the glitz that accompanies T20 cricket, as the area’s top four club sides go head-to-head.

We are urgently seeking sponsors – including a title sponsor – as well as companies who are interested in hospitality at the event. It is the first such event of its type in Warwickshire, and the first time floodlit cricket has been played in the county outside of Edgbaston. If you are interested, or know someone who might be interested, please get in contact with Martin Donald (martinjamesdonald@hotmail.co.uk).

We anticipate plenty of media interest in the local/regional area, so this is a good chance for cricket-loving companies to support local cricket, while getting themselves some exposure.

Beakie is also heading the organising committee, who will doubtless be in touch with many of you to request assistance with the myriad of practical tasks that need to happen if the week is to be successful. Please do your best to assist.

Wardens 3rd XI Clinch Promotion!

In a thrilling finale, Simon Gough led Wardens 3rd XI to promotion minutes from the end of the season.

Only when news filtered through from Alcester & Ragley, via "our men on the ground" Julian Jackson and Eian Marillier, confirming that champions Wellesbourne 2nds had defeated their hosts by a six run margin, were celebrations able to commence at Fortress Glasshouse.

This allowed the Wardens side, who were still in action against Earlswood 2nds, to enjoy a few minutes basking in their achievement, before clinching the comfortable win that brought an immediate return to Cotswold Hills Division Three in 2012.

Goughie's side produced an excellent second half of the campaign, winning seven times, and losing only against champions-elect Wellesbourne 2nds and Norton Lindsey 2nds. This enabled them to recover from an average first half, to go past long-time rivals Alcester 2nds and inconsistent Cookhill to claim the second promotion place.

Goughie's captaincy, consistent new-ball bowling, brilliant fielding and useful batting played a key role in the side's success, but key contributions were found across his team.

The consistent post-June availability of a clutch of King Henry VIII teenagers provided the spark that lifted the team into Division Two, as they all made significant contributions with bat and ball. Tom Brammer proved a consistent opening batsmen, very much in the "modern style," while Vishnu Menon developed into a reliable and dangerous new-ball partner for the skipper and Brad Sanders contributed useful wickets and quick lower order runs. However, it was leg spinner Tom Ballinger that really caught the eye, ending the season with 28 wickets at the unbelievable average of 7.57, including a best of 6-20 at Cookhill.

There were also important contributions with the bat from an assortment of veterans, including Paul Smith, Jon Sanders, Rob Peel and Fred Rex, while allrounders Craig Whiting and Keith Berry offered consistent accuracy with the ball, reliable catching and useful runs. Keith's season featured the team's low point, when he was forced to miss several weeks following a bad facial injury, but also a quite remarkable high, when he smashed Great Alne's attack to all parts in making an incredible 128.

Goughie was also fortunate to be able to call on the very occasional services of two extremely talented cricketers in Joe Melly and Paul Henderson, both of whom seem able to produce a performance with either bat or ball regardless of how infrequently they play.

Countless others, too numerous to mention, made important contributions, with Jack Sorrell's spell that blasted out Cookhill probably being the single key moment that made promotion a possibility. Matt Spencer's fielding in the season's later stages was also very important.

In a division that was low on batting quality, Wardens' ability to consistently post 200-plus scores set the club apart from everyone other than Wellesbourne. The side were also hindered by their skipper's inability to win the toss, which given the bizarre bonus point system operated by the Cotswold League, effectively meant they started most matches as the batting team, with three fewer points available to them.

Division Three will bring a new challenge, but it is hoped that one or two more new faces will arrive at 1st and 2nd team level, allowing the club to be competitive at the higher level.
